COEXIST MOROCCO BLOG

Salaam Shalom News

Our experience is drawing to a close in Morocco,  but friendships and collaboration will continue back in the UK. The programme has been very packed and internet unreliable- so it has been tricky updating but this blog will be catching up over the next few days :-)

We travelled over the Tizi N’Tichka Pass which is over 2200m. In the afternoon we arrived in Ouarzazate. On the way we visited Telouet which is a Kasbah along the former route of the caravans from the Sahara over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech. It lies at an elevation of 1,800 metres (5,900 ft) and was the seat of the El Glaoui family's power. After this we visited Aït BenHaddou, an old Kasbah where the film Gladiator was filmed.

Monday evening the group did a media workshop, which included mapping ideas for ways they could document their experience of the trip. We've got a video clip from the workshop where Gareth feeds back his groups ideas. You should be able to view a video below, if not go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyrT_nSRBqA

Yesterday was very busy, we explored The Mellah, The Souks, The Almoravid Koubba, El Bad I Palace, and the Bet-El Synagogue- where we met a Jewish Historian who talked about the history of Jewish people in Morocco.

Next week Salaam Shalom are embarking on an interfaith-intercultural adventure to Morocco, in partnership with LJ-Netzer, the Youth Movement of Liberal Judaism in the UK.

The main focus on the tour will be looking at Morocco as an example of successful interfaith relations. As well as tours of Marrakech and Fez, a night under canvas in the Sahara Desert and seeing the stunning Atlas Mountains, there will be informal education on the themes of co-existence, tolerance and interfaith dialogue run by Salaam Shalom and LJY-Netzer. Salaam Shalom will also be creating some online resources including podcasts, a video diary and blog.

Check back here throughout the week to follow our journey, with blogs from the team!
